August 2007 Fish Report
Like July whilst we have some Brits out it is mainly short trip Canadian and American visitors and my local regulars from the shop having the fun. Some good catches came out, with Peter the Dutchman nicking 40 odd fish, in a 2 day session of off one of the markers, I had been baiting, ( he asked first so I didn't mind) Another regular had 30 plus fish overnight on the campsite, and again pretty much all the regulars and visitors were catching reasonably well ( Reasonable out here is 10 fish in a day. 20 is good and 30 a proper day)
Young Cameron Knee had the perfect short trip with us. He only had 18 fish in three days, but his first fish was a new PB by a couple of ounces, (19 lb) day two he had his first 20 and on his last day a 25. Long Sault does this all the time, most people seem to build up through the trip with the clonker often coming in the last session. Part of this is the fact that almost every angler no matter how good loose loads of fish in the first few days, they simply cannot believe or handle the power of these fish, you are fishing running water over rocks and muscle beds. This is no commercial carp hole, or lake filled with pot bellied pigs, these buggers are BAD !!!
I think top catch for the month were the two Forrester brothers who had 94 fish to 33 lb. A strange way of fishing, they put two rods out and took turns landing them, so both had identical numbers of fish but Jimmy had the bigger fish.
We also had a visit from a group of Romanians from Bucerest. As often happens they struggled for their first two days loosing fish after fish, but day 3 they had changed rigs, hooks, slackened the drags and landed most of their fish. Sadly it was only a 3 day trip for them, and they are back for the full 7 days next year.
I enjoy fishing with virtually all my customers but Karen, Mike and the Kids were a special
to fish with. The Ladies as always caught the best fish with Karen getting a 27lb fish, and little Matt armed with one of my light Bass rods and a pot of worms, emptied the place of all manner of pretty fish and even got into a school of quite big Bass that was good fun. We don`t often fish for the other species but there is a lot of good fishing here, but lets face it a 4 lb Bass is a big fish a 15lb carp is a small fish...........What are you going to catch ??
Most others had on average 6 fish per day, this compares to an average of over 15 in the Spring and 12 in the fall, but I think a big reason the averages are down in the Summer is because we have more families and casual anglers and few people fish the 10 hour days that die hards demand at other times. ( remeber the above is fish landed and excludes missed runs and lost fish
